Turning Point Behavioral Psychology and Consulting Services

"Unlocking your child’s potential"

What should be expected during our first appointment?
The first few sessions are usually reserved for general “house keeping,” such as discussing the nature of therapy, reviewing policies and procedures and discussing and/or collecting information necessary to help me develop an individualized treatment plan for you. Additionally, this time is reserved for collaboratively discussing and deciding upon treatment goals. The first and subsequent sessions will also focus on establishing a therapeutic relationship by helping you and your child feel comfortable and safe in therapy. With children, this may be done by engaging them in a preferred activity or play and, with caregivers, it may be taking extra time to answer your questions or address any concerns you may have. Most importantly, this is a time for both you and I to determine an appropriateness of fit between your needs and the services I can offer.

How long will we need to be in therapy?
The frequency and duration of your sessions will depend on your presenting concerns, your responsiveness to treatment interventions and your consistency of effort both in and outside of therapy. In fact, families are often given homework and ongoing exercises to use outside of therapy to optimize the therapeutic process. Clients are typically seen on a weekly or bi-weekly basis for hourly appointments during the first few months. Then, once symptom relief is evident and interventions are used successfully outside of sessions, appointments are scheduled on a less frequent basis. After therapy has ended, families always have the option of returning for follow up or “booster” sessions to ensure that treatment gains are maintained.

How do you know therapy will work for our family?

Therapy is a subjective experience and varies across individuals and families. However, to be sure that you receive maximum benefit from your sessions, a comprehensive assessment will be conducted to clearly identify and understand your presenting problem. This information will then be used to identify goals for treatment. Establishing and reviewing your goals throughout the treatment process will inform both you and me of the progress you are making. In the event that you are dissatisfied with your treatment progress or that progress has not been made for quite some time, changes to treatment will need to be discussed.

What methods of payment do you accept?

At this time I do not accept private insurance and do not file insurance claims. However, many insurance companies do reimburse between 50-80% of session costs for “out of network” providers. It is highly suggested that you contact your insurance carrier BEFORE beginning services to inquire about your out of network benefits for mental health services. I am happy to provide you with receipts of payment to submit to your insurance carrier for reimbursement.

How much are your services?

Fees for services vary according to the type of service you are requesting. Service fees and payment options will be discussed and agreed upon prior to your appointment. Our office accepts cash, personal checks and credit cards for payment of services, which will be collected at the time of your appointment.
